(Seguin) - Senior spread-back Cayden Shellnut accounted for eight touchdowns - five rushing and three passing - to help the Lifegate six-man football team outlast Austin Royals Homeschool 63-54 in the Falcons' 2017 homecoming game at Falcon Field on Friday.
The Falcons built a 30-8 lead early in the second quarter, but the Royals scored 22 straight to make it a six-point game at halftime. Lifegate established an 18-point cushion, 56-38, early in the fourth quarter before the visitors rallied again to pull within two, 56-54, with 5:14 to play. Shellnut established the final margin with a 20-yard touchdown run at the 2:08 mark.
Shellnut finished with 173 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 17 carries while completing 15-20 passes for 195 yards and three scores.
Barry Osborne racked up 128 receiving yards and hauled in one of Shellnut's TD passes. Myles McCord coralled two touchdown receptions and totaled 57 yards through the air. McCord also ran for 58 yards and a score on 11 carries.
Shellnut led the defensive effort with 19 tackles, and David Brewer added 12. McCord and Osborne collected nine and eight tackles, respectively.
Luke Landin made three two-point PAT kicks, Shellnut hit one, and Zack McCollough ran for a one-point conversion.
The win moves Lifegate's record to 2-1. The Falcons host Giddings State School this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
