TLU Bulldogs pile up rushing yards, stifle McMurry running game in 31-21 road victory

Junior quarterback Kyle Grona piled up 335 yards of total offense and a touchdown pass in TLU's road victory over McMurry on Saturday.  
 
(Abilene) - Texas Lutheran rushed for 222 yards on 41 carries and held McMurry to seven net rushing yards in a 31-21 American Southwest Conference road win over the War Hawks.

Saturday at McMurry's Wilford Moore Stadium, TLU's Ian Leslie scored on runs of one and 31 yards against the War Hawks. The 31-yarder came at the 10:41 mark of the third quarter and put TLU in front 24-14.

While TLU averaged 5.4 yards per carry, McMurry's rushing attack was held to a 0.2 yards-per-carry average on 30 attempts. The War Hawks went to air for most of their yards, gaining 370 passing yards on 46 attempts.

The Bulldogs had 13 tackles for loss, resulting in 55 yards in lost rushing yardage for the War Hawks. TLU also had five sacks for 29 yards.

Manny Longoria registered a pair of sacks and had three total tackles for loss of 14 yards. Nwankwo Nwankwo had 2.5 tackles for loss, including a sack for seven yards. Nwankwo also forced a fumble.

Jackson Worley and Joshua Head also had sacks in the win. Adairius Norwood led TLU with eight total tackles, and he had three tackles for loss.

James Bell added six tackles and had an interception with an INT return of 22 yards.

TLU improved to 2-2 overall and to 2-1 in the ASC. McMurry fell to 1-4 overall and to 1-3 in the ASC.

Leslie rushed nine times for 49 yards and complimented quarterback Kyle Grona's rushing efforts. Grona, the junior signal-caller, rushed for a career-best 139 yards on 21 carries.

Grona also completed 16 of 31 yards for 196 yards and had an 11-yard TD toss to Charles Robinson Jr. in the fourth quarter. The strike to Robinson completed an eight-play, 79-yard drive that took 3:35 off the clock.

TLU received a jolt from the kicking game with a 74-yard kickoff return for a first-quarter touchdown from CJ Romero. The kickoff return erased McMurry's 7-0 lead, which the War Hawks took on a six-yard rush at the 3:50 mark. Sixteen seconds later, Romero had the Bulldogs even with his touchdown scamper.

The Bulldogs averaged 33.75 yards per kickoff return against McMurry. A.J. Mason also had a 40-yard return, and Romero had two kickoff returns for 89 yards.
