No. 5 Navarro falls in five sets to No. 3 La Vernia

(La Vernia) – Navarro was the better team early in Friday’s District 27-4A matchup of TGCA state-ranked volleyball programs, but the momentum eventually slipped away from the Panthers in a 3-2 road loss to La Vernia.

The No. 5-ranked Panthers threatened to sweep the No. 3 Bears with back-to-back 25-17 wins in the first two sets. La Vernia staved off elimination by dominating the third game 25-14, then edged Navarro 29-27 in a grueling fourth set to knot things up at 2-2. The Bears eked out a 15-13 win in the fifth and deciding game to hand the Panthers their first district loss.

Allie Benner and Peyton Roach each delivered 12 kills for Navarro, and Hailey Weidenfeller added 10 to go with 3.5 blocks. Sydney Sahd collected 32 digs, Roach 19, and Carolyn Burch 10. Weidenfeller and Buch each served for one ace.

Navarro is 3-1 in district play, 30-5 overall. The Panthers travel to Wimberley for a 27-4A match on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
