(Seguin) - Senior spread-back Cayden Shellnut produced eight total touchdowns for the second straight week Friday night to propel the Lifegate six-man football team to an 86-39 win over Giddings State School at Falcon Field.
Shellnut ran for 209 yards and four touchdowns while throwing for 160 yards and four more scores.
Myles McCord delivered a strong all-around performance for the Falcons. The sophomore totaled 73 yards and three touchdowns receiving, he completed two passes for 32 yards and a score, and he led the defense with nine tackles.
Barry Osborne hauled in two touchdown receptions as part of a 90-yard evening, and Quentin Shellnut caught a scoring pass as well.
Barson Schmidt collected two interceptions for the Lifegate defense, and David Brewer came up with one. Brewer, Josh Riley, Shellnut, and Osborne each recovered a fumble.
Lifegate trailed 26-20 late in the first quarter, but led 36-26 by the end of the frame. The Falcons outscored Giddings State School 30-13 in the second period to take a 74-39 lead into halftime.
"We just did a better job of executing on offense, and we found a way to kind of slow their running-back down - he's awful good" Lifegate head coach John Rabon said of the second-quarter burst. "We didn't handle him too well in the first part of the game, but we did better on him, got some stops, and then the offense did the rest."
Shellnut strung together a 40-yard touchdown pass to Osborne and a 40-yard run for a score to activate the 45-point mercy rule and end the game in the third quarter.
The Falcons (3-1) travel to face Fredericksburg-Heritage this Friday at 7:30 p..m.
