Seguin rolls through 5A bi-district round with sweep of Ann Richards
(Kyle) – Seguin delivered a focused, energetic performance Tuesday night in the opening match of the 5A Region IV volleyball playoffs, sweeping Austin-Ann Richards in three sets (25-15, 25-15, 25-14) at Kyle-Lehman.
“I think overall, we did a very good job of staying steady on defense, and I think we utilized players tonight on offense that we have not, and what better time than now to be clicking,” Seguin head coach Kristi Stanley said. “I just hope it continues throughout the next few games.”
Abby Cheek led Seguin’s attack with 12 kills, Presley Carter added 10, and Desiray Rodriguez and Emmy Riordan totaled four apiece.
Rodriguez recorded four solo blocks and a block assist. Megan Wilke set for 35 assists and sent four service aces over the net. Cheek, Kaylie Koenen, and Leandra Priestly each added two aces.
Koenen paced the defensive effort with nine digs, Wilke came up with eight, Priestly and Presley Engelke seven apiece, Carsyn Dietz six, and Cheek five.
The level of competition ramps up immediately for Seguin in the area round of the playoffs. The Matadors face District 27-5A champion Richmond-Foster (27-8), which rides a 15-match winning streak after sweeping Burbank in the bi-district round.
The bulk of the Seguin roster that reached the 5A Region IV championship match in 2016 is back for this year’s playoff run, and Stanley says the players have embraced her demanding coaching style because they understand the level of play necessary to make a similar run over the next two weeks.
“I’ve told them, and I actually reminded them before the game, that I will never be satisfied,” the coach said. “We could win state, and I will never be satisfied – there’s always something we can get better at, so I just think that all aspects of our game – our blocking needs to tighten up a little bit, a few more balls we could have gotten up, passes that were off the net – I mean, there’s always something. But overall, I was pleased with the performance.”
Seguin (27-15) meets Richmond-Foster on Thursday in Schulenburg. The start time was tentatively set for 6 p.m., but hadn’t been finalized at press time.
