Second-half surge carries UT Tyler to 84-65 win over TLU men
(Tyler) – The University of Texas at Tyler out-scored Texas Lutheran 53-29 in the second half to register an 84-65 non-conference men’s basketball win Tuesday night at the UT Tyler Herrington Patriot Center.
UT Tyler moved its record to 4-0 and swept the season series with Texas Lutheran. The Bulldogs fell to 2-3.
The game was tied at 54 with 10:43 to play. The Patriots went on a 30-6 run over the next nine minutes of action.
TLU shot just 29.4 percent in the second half after shooting 48.5 percent in the first half.
Melvin Anthony led UT Tyler with 23 points. He made five of his six three-point attempts.
Emeka Obukwelu added 19 points, and Josh Tatum chipped in 18. Skyler Hadden scored 16.
Nathan Josephs paced the Bulldogs with 20 points. Alex Cage and Matthew Gillette registered 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Josephs added six rebounds and three assists. Gillette collected five rebounds and also had three assists.
TLU's next two contests on the schedule are exhibition road games against NCAA Division I opponents Texas A&M Corpus Christi (7 p.m. Friday in Corpus Christi) and Incarnate Word (7 p.m. Tuesday in San Antonio).
TLU women drop 78-71 decision at home to Mary Hardin-Baylor
(Seguin) – The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team made a season-best 10 three-pointers Tuesday against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, but the threes were not enough as the Cru swept the season series versus TLU with a 78-71 victory in Memorial Gymnasium.
UMHB improved to 3-1 with the non-conference victory over the Bulldogs. TLU fell to 1-5.
The game was tied at 68 with 4:16 to play. Cami Davis's lay-up pulled the Bulldogs even.
UMHB closed out the game on a 10-3 run. The Cru's point guard, Meghan Turner, made her lone three-pointer of the night at the 2:26 mark to give UMHB a four-point advantage. Turner finished the night with 10 points and seven assists.
Alicia Blackwell led UMHB with 15 points. She made three three-pointers. Blackwell added seven rebounds. Kendall Rollins contributed 13 points and eight rebounds.
TLU was led in scoring by Davis's 13, Abby Hroch's 13 and Jordan Estrada's 13. Estrada made three three-pointers.
Tara Molina chipped in 11 points and a game-high 10 assists. Molina also made three threes. She grabbed four rebounds.
Hroch joined Molina in notching a double-double. She had 10 rebounds to go with her 13 points.
UMHB out-rebounded TLU by two, 38-36, and had nine fewer turnovers, 10 to 19.
The Bulldogs play their next five games away from Memorial Gymnasium. TLU's next contest is scheduled for Dec. 5 at Concordia Texas in Austin. The Bulldogs' next home game is Jan. 5
against Centenary College (La.). That contest will be the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener for the Bulldogs.
