(Bryan) - The Lifegate Falcons are one victory away from their first state title since 2012 after cruising past defending champion Baytown Christian 62-16 Friday night in the TAPPS Six-Man Division III state semifinals at Allan Academy in Bryan.
Senior spread-back Cayden Shellnut accounted for seven Lifegate touchdowns, running for four and throwing for three more. He ran for 117 yards, threw for 113, and led the defense with 20 tackles. Myles McCord chipped in with 68 rushing yards and a touchdown, Quentin Shellnut totaled 46 receiving yards and two scores, and Barry Osborned logged a team-high 58 receiving yards with one touchdown catch.
Cayden Shellnut broke loose for a 48-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and Luke Landin's two-point PAT kick gave the Falcons an early 8-0 lead. Baytown Christian recorded a safety, a touchdown, and a one-point conversion to lead 9-8 at the end of the period.
Lifegate dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 24-7 to take a 32-16 cushion into halftime. Shellnut ran for scores of one and 20 yards, and found Barry Osborne with a 37-yard touchdown pass in the period. Landin connected on all three of his two-point kicks in the period.
The Shellnut siblings combined for the Falcons first touchdown of the third quarter, with Cayden delivering a 40-yard pass to Quinten, followed by another Landin PAT, to make it a 40-16 contest. The two hooked up again on a two-yard score later in the quarter, pushing the lead to 46-16 going into the fourth period.
Cayden Shellnut's fourth touchdown run of the night, from 20 yards out, a Myles McCord touchdown run set up by a Quinten Shellnut interception, and two PAT kicks from Landin established a 46-point cushion and ended the game by mercy rule before the fourth quarter expired.
Lifegate (8-3) meets Granbury-North Central Texas in the TAPPS Six-Man Division III state championship game this Thursday at 3 p.m. at Midway ISD's Panther Stadium in Hewitt, just south of Waco.
