(Geronimo) – Navarro came up short in the championship game of its annual girls basketball tournament Saturday afternoon, falling to Class-5A Lockhart 40-28 at the Navarro Events Center in Geronimo.
The loss followed four wins over the first two days of tournament action. The Panthers won pool-play games over Center Point 62-26 and Austin-Lanier 65-44 on Thursday, and followed with a 33-28 pool win over Cuero and a 49-26 Gold Bracket triumph against Floresville on Friday.
Amber Reneau and Taylor Shelton scored 12 points apiece in the win over Center Point, and Hailey Teasley finished with 11.
Reneau netted a game-high 18 against Lanier on Thursday, Shelton chipped in with 12, and Anna Longoria had nine.
In Friday’s win over Cuero, Reneau led the Panthers offensively with 13 points. Shelton led all scorers with 19 in the bracket victory over Floresville, while Reneau and Teasley totaled seven apiece.
Lockhart jumped out to a 17-10 halftime lead in Saturday’s championship game and used a 23-18 scoring edge in the second half to pull away for the 12-point win. Reneau scored nine points for Navarro, and Teasley finished with seven.
After a 4-1 tournament run, Navarro’s season record is 12-3. The Panthers host Lytle tonight at 6:30 p.m.
