(Lockhart) – Seguin notched an impressive road win to open the District 26-5A girls basketball schedule Tuesday night, handing previously undefeated Lockhart its first loss of the season in a 40-38 defensive battle.
Lockhart went 12-0 in non-district play, but the Matadors played what head coach Ricky Fernandez called “outstanding team defense” to get an early leg up on the Lions in the district standings.
Seguin trailed 11-6 at the end of the first quarter, but won the second period 12-7 to tie the game at 18-all going into halftime. The Mats built a five-point lead with a 15-10 scoring edge in the third quarter and held on for the two-point win in the fourth.
Hannah Patek scored 13 points to lead Seguin offensively, and Desiray Rodriguez chipped in with 11. Carsyn Dietz and Duvelsa Briones netted eight points apiece.
The Matadors (6-12, 1-0) continue the District 26-5A schedule Friday at Goldie Harris Gym with a 6:30 p.m. home game against Dripping Springs.
