(Seguin) – The Seguin High School volleyball team punctuated another successful season with eight honorees on the 26-5A All-District awards list.
Senior outside hitter Abby Cheek was named the District Offensive MVP. The four-year varsity starter led the Matadors with 569 kills (4.38 per set) and also totaled 33 aces, 341 digs, and 35 blocks during the 2017 season.
Three more seniors – setter Megan Wilke, libero Kaylie Koenen and middle blocker Desiray Rodriguez – each made first-team All-District.
Wilke distributed 1,208 assists and also contributed 43 aces and 324 digs.
Koenen, a Texas State signee, collected a team-high 596 digs (4.89 per set) and delivered 60 service aces.
Rodriguez led the Mats in two statistical categories, sending a team-high 63 aces over the net while recording 91.5 blocks. She also finished third on the team in kills with 288.
Senior outside hitter Presley Carter landed on the All-District second team. Carter was Seguin’s second leading kill producer behind Cheek with 309.
Junior middle blocker Carsyn Dietz, junior defensive specialist Presley Engelke, and senior defensive specialist Leandra Priestly each made the All-Distirct honorable mention list.
Dietz finished the year with 176 kills and 43 blocks. Engelke recorded 305 digs and 35 aces. Priestly totaled 446 digs and 60 aces.
The aforementioned group helped the 2017 Matadors post a 28-16 overall record, a second-place finish in District 26-5A, and a trip to the third round of the UIL playoffs in Kristi Stanley’s sixth season as head coach. Seguin fell to Kerrville-Tivy in four sets in the 5A Region IV quarterfinals on Nov. 7.
