Navarro boys handle La Vernia for second straight district win
(Geronimo) - The frontcourt combination of Will Eveld and Mason McCaig sparked the Navarro boys basketball team to a 58-45 home win over La Vernia Friday night, the Panthers' second straight victory in District 27-4A.
Eveld poured in 20 points to go with eight rebounds, while McCaig notched a double-double with 18 points on 8-13 shooting and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Navarro won a low-scoring first quarter 10-6, and La Vernia's 14-10 edge in the second period produced 20-20 deadlock at halftime.
The Panthers dominated the third quarter, using a 20-8 run to take a 40-28 cushion into the fourth period. Navarro kept the Bears at bay in the fourth quarter by scoring 18 points and allowing 17.
Kimble Harrison chipped in with seven points and six rebounds. Rosendo Cuevas drilled a pair of three-pointers for six points, Tyler Law totaled four points, and Daniel Pina finished with three.
The win moves Navarro to 2-1 in district play, 9-11 overall. The Panthers can move into a first-place tie with Wimberley (3-0 dist.) in the 27-4A standings with a home win over the Texans on Tuesday. The opening tip at the Navarro Events Center is slated for 6:30 p.m.
Navarro girls knock off TGCA No. 11 La Vernia 62-58
(La Vernia) - Senior guard Amber Reneau pumped in 25 points Friday night to propel Navarro to a 62-58 disrict road win over La Vernia, the 11th ranked team in the Texas Girls Coaches Association's 4A state poll.
The Panthers jumped on the home team early to build a 34-23 hafltime lead and held on down the stretch for the four-point win.
Emily Hinkelmann supported Reneau's offensive outburst with 18 points, Hailey Teasley added eight, and Allie Benner chipped in with six. Anna Longoria and Mckayla Hawes each had two, and Molly Vrana made a free throw.
Navarro (22-8), La Vernia (24-7), and Gonzales are all tied for second place at the mid-point of the 27-4A schedule with identical 3-2 district records, two games back of San Antonio-Veterans Memorial (5-0).
The Panthers open the second round of district play Tuesday with a visit to Wimberley at 6:30 p.m.
