Navarro softball perfect in Huber Ranch tourney, 7-0 to start the season
(Seguin) - The Navarro softball team churned out six consecutive wins without a loss week in its annual home tournament at Huber Ranch, and ended up with a second-place finish behind Schertz-John Paul II due to the points tiebreak system.
The Panthers handled Riverside 7-2, Marion 12-0, and Brackenridge 18-6 on Thursday, then dispatched Center Point 12-1 on Friday. Navarro closed the tournament with a pair of shutouts on Saturday, 3-0 over Devine and 11-0 over San Antonio-Jefferson.
Alexis Valdez pitched 18 innings and notched four wins, compiling a 3.50 tournament ERA with 10 strikeouts and three walks. Sydnie Booker earned a pair of wins, allowing six hits with six strikeouts and two walks in 7-2/3 scoreless innings.
Alyssa Hernandez led Navarro at the plate, going a combined 12-18 with two home runs, 11 RBIs, and nine runs scored. Valdez finished the tournament 8-13 with three doubles, drove in seven, and scored five times. Bailee Stanzione scored a team-high 10 runs while going 8-15 with three doubles and driving in two.
Haleigh Ortiz belted four doubles, a triple, and a home run as part of a 7-13 weekend with eight runs and three RBIs. Amber Reneau drove in six, scored five times, and finished 6-11 with two triples and a double. Booker also went 6-11. She and Lindsey Gresham each drove in four runs. Ashlea Frederick recorded six hits, scored eight times, and drove in three. Katie Ricketts totaled four RBIs and seven runs scored, while Emily Hinkelmann had two of each.
As a team, Navarro hit .496 for the tournament and only struck out eight times in 156 plate appearances.
The Panthers visit Runge tonight at 5 p.m.
Marion softball notches 3-3 mark in Navarro tourney
(Seguin) - The Marion softball team produced mixed results last week during Navarro's tournament at Huber Ranch, recorded three wins and three losses over the course of Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The Bulldogs went 2-1 on Thursday, sandwiching a 12-0 loss to tournament host Navarro with a 13-2 win over Brackenridge and a 6-5 squeaker over Center Point.
Marion suffered a pair of losses on Friday, falling to Devine 20-6 and to Southside 9-3. The Bulldogs rebounded to finish the tournament with a 6-2 win over St. Anthony on Saturday.
Madison Moos tossed a five-inning two hitter in the win over Brackenridge, striking out seven with only one walk. She went 2-4 at the plate with a double and three RBIs. Alyana Robles also doubled and drove in three. Veronica Gonzales collected two hits, three runs, and an RBI, and Toryn Autry drove in two. Kyleigh Mulanax had a hit, three walks, and three runs scored.
The win over Center Point saw Madison Ross go 2-3 with two runs and an RBI. Mulanax, Moos, and Ingrid Nava each drove in a run, and Autry scored twice. Moos lasted 4-1/3 innings in the circle to earn the win, allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits with six strikeouts and six walks.
In the tournament closing win over St. Anthony on Saturday, Madyson Schulze tripled and scored once, and the Bulldogs received RBIs from Robles, Gonzales, and Madison Doss. Moose struck out seven in five innigns, allowing two runs on five hits, to pick up the win.
Marion's season record is 4-3.
