(New Braunfels) - The Seguin High School softball team turned in a strong showing at the New Braunfels-Canyon tournament last week, notching five victories against a single loss over the course of the three-day event.
The Matadors opened the event with a pair of wins on Thursday, doubling up Hutto 4-2 and handling Canyon Lake 10-3. Seguin followed with a 5-1 win over Ingleside in Friday's first game before suffering its only loss, 5-1, to tournament host Canyon. The Mats closed the event with two wins on Saturday, blanking Victoria-East 7-0 and outscoring San Antonio-Highlands 10-4.
Marissa Bradley went 7-16 with eight runs scored and three RBIs over the course of the tournament. Shyann Atchley finished 5-15 with two doubles, four RBIs, and five runs. Madeline Bone collected five hits in 10 at-bats to go with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Presley Pence, Sandy Hernandez, Caitlyn Nieto and McKenzie Neumann each drove in three runs as well, with Neumann recording two doubles. Hernandez went 5-13 with three runs scored, while Pence finished 4-13 and crossed the plate four times.
Vanessa Garza went 6-19, drove in two, and scored four runs. Ashlyn Flores and Kaitlyn Smith each recorded an RBI as well. Breana Conrey and Katlyn Guzman recorded two hits apiece. Grace Scheel, Katie Dreibrodt, and Destiny Carroll were also among the 15 Matadors who had at least one hit during the tournament.
In the pitcher's circle, Garza posted a 4-1 record and a 2.94 ERA in tournament play. Seguin's senior ace allowed nine runs (seven earned) with 12 strikeouts and four walks over the course of 16-2/3 innings in five appearances.
Bradley earned a win as well, allowing two runs on two hits with five strikeouts in three innings Saturday against Highlands. Flores worked 9-1/3 relief innings over five appearances, giving up two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts and no walks to notch a 0.75 tournament ERA.
Seguin's season record is 6-1. The Matadors host San Antonio-Incarnate Word tonight at 7 p.m.
