Seguin baseball drops opener to Clemens 3-0

(Schertz) – Aside from a sixth-inning single by Cody Kachmar, the Seguin High School baseball team’s bats were silent in a season opening 3-0 road loss to Clemens on Monday.

The Buffaloes used a combination of three pitchers, with Blake Wagner and Logan Lund keeping the Matadors hitless and striking out nine over the first five innings. Kachmar lofted a base hit to right field against Jett Speed to lead off the sixth, but Speed went on to strike out four in two scoreless relief frames from that point.

Mikey Hernandez pitched well in defeat for Seguin, allowing three unearned runs and three hits with five strikeouts and only one walk in five innings. Nathan Shepard relieved Hernandez and recorded a strikeout in 1-2-3 sixth.

Clemens scored all three runs in the bottom of the second inning with help from three Seguin errors and a hit batter.

The Matadors (0-1) are co-hosting a tournament with Navarro this Thursday through Saturday. Seguin meets East Central on Thursday at 11 a.m. and Cedar Creek at 4 p.m., with both games at ‘Smokey’ Joe Williams Field.
