(Seguin) - Texas Lutheran Baseball swept this week's Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week awards as the conference announced Riley Schaefer as the Hitter of the Week and Dylan Drgac as Pitcher of the Week for games played through Sunday.
It was the first Hitter of the Week honor for Schaefer and second time this season a Bulldog hitter has garnered the award. Schaefer also claimed a spot on this week's d3baseball.com Team of the Week.
Schaefer continued his blazing start to the 2018 campaign, posting a .625 batting average in four games for the Bulldogs. Schaefer went a combined 10-for-16 with eight total runs scored and eight RBI, helping the Bulldogs improve to a 9-0 record overall, their best season start since 2007.
In the victory over Mary Hardin-Baylor, Schaefer collected three hits, scored three runs and drove in two. He had a double and a triple.
In the three-game series versus Hardin-Simmons, the Bulldogs extended a 4-2 lead in the eighth with a three-run home run from the senior center fielder. Schaefer went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and three RBI in game one.
For the week, he added three stolen bases - one against UMHB and two in game one of Friday's doubleheader.
For the year, Schaefer leads the SCAC in a number of categories, including hits (17), runs (15), triples (2), total bases (26), and stolen bases (5). He is third in the SCAC for at-bats (36), sixth for slugging percentage (.722) and eighth in the SCAC in batting average (.472).
It was the first Pitcher of the Week honor for Drgac (Caldwell/Caldwell).
Drgac secured his third pitching win of the season in TLU's victory over Hardin-Simmons Thursday night.
Against the Cowboys, Drgac struck out 10 in 6-2/3 innings of work and moved to 3-0 on the season. The senior right-hander allowed just two runs, only one earned, and walked one.
He had one inning of relief against UMHB He struck out two and allowed only one hit.
For the week, Drgac struck out 12 total. He had 14.09 strikeouts per nine innings and finished the week with a 1.25 ERA.
On the year, Drgac leads the SCAC in wins (3), total innings pitched (19.2) and runners picked off (2). He is second in the SCAC for batters struck out (19) and in a four-way tie for fifth in batters struck out looking (4).
The Bulldogs are scheduled for a three-game series this weekend against University of Texas at Tyler in Seguin. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. Friday evening at Katt-Isbel Field.
