(Wimberley) – Marion boys basketball looks to advance to the 3A regional quarterfinals for the first time since 2015 tonight when the Bulldogs face Comfort in an area-round matchup at Wimberley High School.
The Bulldogs are 27-6 and riding a 17-game winning streak in Jon Allen’s 11th season as head coach after a perfect 14-0 run to the District 27-3A championship and a 66-46 dismantling of Vanderbilt-Industrial in Tuesday’s bi-district round.
Allen has led Marion to the UIL playoffs nine times in 11 years, including the last eight consecutive. The Bulldogs have advanced to the third round twice, in 2011 and 2015.
Comfort enters tonight with a 20-13 overall mark under head coach Tut Wardlaw. The Bobcats finished third in District 25-3A behind Blanco and Johnson City and opened the playoffs Tuesday night with a 74-69 win over Poth.
Tonight marks the second time Marion and Comfort have faced each other this season. The Bulldogs won the first meeting 50-33 in Marion back on Dec. 12.
Marion used a 24-5 run in the second quarter to break open the December game against the Bobcats. The Bulldogs shot 62.9 percent that night and held Comfort to 30.3 percent. Junior forward Jackson Allen proved a tough matchup for the Bobcats, totaling 20 points on 9-13 shooting, including two threes, and 10 rebounds.
Marion held Comfort’s two leading scorers, Danny Carlos (14.7) and R.J. Rodriguez (12.6) well below their season averages, giving up nine and four points to the duo, respectively.
The aforementioned Allen (13.8), fellow junior forward Jacob Wallace (12.7), and senior point guard Creet Rabelandt (9.2) have been the Bulldogs’ offensive leaders this season, and they each came up big in the playoff opener with 16 points apiece against Industrial on Tuesday.
Wallace also averages a team-high 8.2 rebounds per game, and has been a strong playmaker of late as well, totaling 11 assists in Marion’s last two games.
Tonight’s opening tip in Wimberley is slated for 7 p.m. The game will air live on KWED 1580 AM and Seguintoday.com, with pre-game coverage at 6:45.
