Seguin softball drops district opener to Lockhart
(Lockhart) - Two errors that led to three unearned runs proved costly for the Seguin High School softball team in Tuesday's District 26-5A opener, as the Matadors suffered a 4-2 road loss in Lockhart.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and the Mats tied the game in the top of the second when Tate Smith singled and eventually came home on a groundout by Sandy Hernandez.
Marissa Bradley drove in Shyann Atchley with an RBI-single to put Seguin in front 2-1 in the top of the the third.
Gracie Bell scored the tying run for Lockhart in the bottom of the fourth after reaching on a dropped fly ball in center field and sprinting home on Marissa Camacho's double. A Seguin error allowed Lockhart to take the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Smith went 2-3 with a double on the night, and Vanessa Garza went 2-5. Atchley, Presley Pence, McKenzie Neumann, Bradley, Hernandez, and Caitlyn Nieto each recorded hits as well.
Garza pitched the first four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits five strikeouts and a walk. Ashlyn Flores worked the fifth and sixth in relief of Garza, giving up the two unearned runs while allowing three hits with one walk and one strikeout.
Amanda White earned the win for Lockhart, despite giving up 10 hits. She struck out nine, walked three, and allowed two runs (one earned) in seven innings.
The Matadors had opportunities to do more damage against White, but they stranded 14 runners.
Seguin is 0-1 in district play, 8-5 overall. The Matadors host their annual tournament at Huber Ranch today through Saturday.
Seguin baseball earns road win over Smithville
(Smithville) - The Seguin baseball team found the win column for the first time this season on Tuesday with a 7-1 road triumph over Smithville.
Michael Hernandez was dominant on the mound, tossing a one-hitter and giving up a single unearned run with six strikeouts and only one walk over seven innings to earn the complete-game win.
Cody Kachmar, Brendan Burgess, Hayden Haas, and Matt Weichold each drove in a run. Weichold, Burgess and Haas each went 2-3, while Kachmar and Tristan Moreno each scored twice. Burgess hit a double, as did Kachmar. Colton Demuth and Brennen Turner also recorded hits. Eli Edwards and Kendall Harborth each crossed the plate once.
The Matadors (1-4-1) have tournament games in San Marcos today against San Antonio-Johnson at 9:30 a.m. and Buda-Hays at 5 p.m.
Marion softball pounces Randolph in 27-3A opener
(Marion) - Marion softball only needed four innings to carve its first notch in the District 27-3A win column Tuesday night, as the Bulldogs rolled to a 15-0 run-rule victory over Randolph.
Marion plated three runs in the first inning, eight in the third, and four in the fourth to put the mercy rule in effect.
Brianna Randle, Madison Moos, Kyleigh Mulanax, and Veronica Gonzalez each drove in two runs. Hannah Chappel and Madison Ross each recorded an RBI as well. Randle and Madison Schulze each scored three runs, while Ross and Madison Doss each crossed the plate twice. The Bulldogs received base hits from Randle, Mulanax, Alyana Robles, Chappell, and Toryn Autry.
Moos tossed a four-inning two hitter and struck out six with only one walk to earn the win in the pitcher's circle.
Marion is 1-0 in district play, 8-4-1 this season. The Bulldogs compete in Seguin's tournament at Huber Ranch today through Saturday.
Navarro softball suffers first loss of 2018
(Seguin) - Schertz-John Paul II downed Navarro 12-2 at Huber Ranch Tuesday night to hand the Panthers their first loss of the 2018 softball season.
Navarro's only scoring came on Sydnie Booker's two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, narrowing John Paul II's lead to 4-2. The visitors scored three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, and three more in the seventh to pull away from the Panthers.
Ashlea Frederick went 3-4 at the plate, while Alyssa Hernandez and Bailee Stanzione each finished 2-3. Hernandez tripled, and Stanzione hit a double. Alexis Valdez singled and scored on Booker's home run.
Navarro (10-0-1) heads to Fischer on Friday to face Canyon Lake at 5:30 p.m.
