Navarro baseball finishes second in Floresville tourney with 5-1 mark
(Floresville) – Navarro won its first five games in the Floresville tournament over the course of three days before dropping the finale 11-7 to Victoria West on Saturday.
The Panthers cruised past the Floresville JV 20-0 and edged San Antonio-Lanier 8-6 on Thursday. Navarro outlasted the Floresville varsity 7-5 and blanked Victoria West 3-0 on Friday. Facing the same two teams Saturday, the Panthers doubled up Floresville 4-2 before the tournament ending loss to Victoria West.
Mason McCalip and Leo Herrera each went 2-3, drove in one and scored once Thursday against Lanier. McCalip doubled and tripled against both Thursday games, and drove in four runs against the Floresville JV. Herrera collected four hits, four runs, and two RBIs against the Floresville JV, while Joe Burch went 3-4, drove in three, and scored twice. Zach Moore recorded two hits, two runs, and two RBIs.
Dakota Leopold collected two hits, scored twice, and drove in two Friday against Floresville, and Joe Burch earned the win on the mound. Zach Moore tossed a one-hitter and struck out six in Friday’s shutout of Victoria West, and he drove in a run as well. Leopold and McCalip each notched an RBI as well.
Evans Hendricks earned the win on the mound in Saturday’s rematch with Floresville, holding the tournament host to two unearned runs on four hits with three strikeouts in five innings. Herrera went 2-3 with a double and scored once. Moore, Leopold, and Riley Lipton each drove in a run. In the loss to Victoria West, Burch doubled, drove in two, and scored twice, while Moore went 2-3 with a double and two runs scored.
After a 5-1 tournament run, Navarro’s season record is 5-4-1. The Panthers compete in the La Grange tournament this Thursday – Saturday.
Marion baseball ends up 1-3 in Bandera tourney
(Bandera) – The Marion baseball team gained valuable experience competing against larger schools over the weekend while finishing with a 1-3 record in the Bandera tournament.
The Bulldogs opened the event with a 6-0 win over Class-4A Poteet on Friday before falling to Houston Christian 5-4. Marion closed the tournament with losses to a pair of 5A programs on Saturday, 2-1 to East Central and 6-1 to Medina Valley.
Tucker Woods went 2-2, doubled, and drove in a run against Poteet. Jared Mendez tossed a five-inning three-hitter and struck out four to earn the win. Woods and Cameron Luensmann each drove in a run against Houston Christian. Garrett Corkran went 2-3 in that game.
Mendez drove in Corkran for Marion’s only run in Saturday’s loss to East Central. Corkran went 3-3 with a double in that contest. Tyler Seboldt pitched well in defeat, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Woods scored the Bulldogs’ only run against Medina Valley, and Corkran went 2-3 at the plate.
Marion (4-3) opens District 27-3A play tonight with a 7 p.m. road game in Stockdale.
