Seguin baseball scratches out district opening win
(Lockhart) – Seguin manufactured just enough runs behind a strong pitching performance from Michael Hernandez to open the District 26-5A baseball schedule with a 3-1 road victory in Lockhart on Tuesday.
After allowing an early run to Lockhart in the first inning, Hernandez settled in to keep the Lions scoreless over the next five frames. He struck out six, walked two, and allowed just three hits on the night.
Seguin’s Cody Kachmar stole home to tie the score at 1-1 in the top of the third inning.
Chase Boenig sprinted home for the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the fifth.
Jayden Herbold singled in Braeden Trost for an insurance run in the top of the sixth.
Salvador Trujillo relieved Hernandez in the seventh and retired Lockhart in order to earn the save.
Eli Edwards went 2-2 at the plate for the Matadors. He and Kachmar each had three stolen bases. Kachmar, Boenig, Herbold, and Brendon Burgess each recorded a base hit.
Seguin is 1-0 in district play, 3-7-1 overall. The Matadors compete in the Cedar Creek Tournament Thursday through Saturday.
Corkran’s no-hitter sparks Marion baseball in district opener
(Stockdale) – Senior right-hander Garrett Corkran tossed a five-inning no-hitter Tuesday night to help Marion open the District 27-3A baseball schedule with a 22-0 run-rule victory in Stockdale.
Corkran struck out 10 Brahmas and missed a perfect game by a single walk.
Marion scored its runs in bunches, producing seven in the top of the second, 13 in the fourth, and two more in the fifth.
Tyler Seboldt, Tucker Woods, and Jared Mendez each collected three hits and two RBIs, and Mendez scored four times. Jayden Williams and Cade Baumann each drove in three on two hits, with Williams crossing the plate three times.
Cameron Luensmann notched a three-RBI night as well. Corkran and Tayler Mills each drove in runs. Mills finished with two hits and four runs scored. Noah Haese doubled twice, scored twice, and drove in a run.
All told, Marion finished with 19 hits on the night.
The Bulldogs (5-3, 1-0) travel to play in the Blanco tournament Thursday through Saturday.
