Seguin Citizen: Ashley Hartwick

What is your current occupation (or where do you attend school), and what does that involve?

"I am employed with the Camino Real Early Childhood Intervention agency here in Seguin as an early intervention specialist. I go into the homes and/or daycares of 0-3 year olds who have a developmental delay or medical diagnosis that may lead to developmental delays and provide the children and their families/caregivers with developmental services for the children. I am also part of the evaluating team for the agency I work for which involves going out and assisting therapists with evaluating children we have received referrals for and determining whether or not they are eligible for services and therapies through our agency. I am also currently attending Texas State University for my Master’s degree in family and child studies with an emphasis on infant mental health. If all goes as planned I will be finished this December. I just completed one of my internships for this program with the Guadalupe Valley Family Violence Shelter. During my internship with this agency this past semester, I participated in developing and implementing community outreach and assisted with curriculum and presentation development as well for victims and/or possible victims of violence. I was also able to participate in intervention as well as in some crisis intervention with some of the families residing in the shelter throughout the semester."

What do you do off the clock “Just for fun?”

"I enjoy going on walks or hiking and spending time with my family, boyfriend, and friends. I used to force myself to run for exercise but it has become something that I actually do enjoy doing the majority of the time now. I love running 5K’s with my mom and our friends!"

Who are the members of your immediate family?

"Debi Hartwick (mom), Delton Hartwick (Dad), and TJ Hartwick (Brother)."

What is the biggest challenge you have ever faced?

"The biggest challenge I have ever faced would have to be when I was 16- years-old and was in an extremely bad car accident. I was injured very badly and in several different places on my body. One of which required me to have a skin graph for a burn on my arm. I was unable to use my left arm for a good while and had to go through physical therapy in order to be able to gain usage of it again."

What is your favorite TV show and movie?

"I do not watch much TV but I would have to say that my favorite show is Criminal Minds. I do not have a favorite movie but I do love almost all of Tyler Perry’s movies."

What type of Music do you enjoy (favorite band, song, etc.)?

"I listen to a variety of different types of music and do not have a real favorite."

What is your favorite Seguin business and restaurant?

"My favorite Seguin business would have to be Sister Suzie’s. I am a huge chocolate lover and they have almost any kind of chocolate you can think of! "

What is something folks may not really know about you?

"That is a hard question. Maybe that I have set a new goal for myself of being able to complete a half marathon (13 mile run) within the next year."

What are your roles in the community?

"My role in the community is to provide developmental services to the children and their families that are enrolled in the ECI program I work for and to also provide these families with any resources or education they want and/or need concerning their child’s condition and/or concerning any member of their family."

Discuss your professional background/achievement/leadership roles.

"I have a bachelor’s degree and graduated with honors from Texas State University with a degree in Family and Child Development and a Minor in Early Childhood Intervention. I was part of several honor societies during my undergraduate work and am part of one as a graduate student as well. I was also the president of the Family and Child Development Association as an undergraduate as well. I have been working as an early intervention specialist with the agency I am currently employed with for three years now."

What are the proudest moments in your professional life or in your career?

"One of the proudest moments was, of course, graduating with my bachelor’s degree and I am assuming graduating with my Masters in December with top that. However, there are several proud moments I experience in my career. Every time a family thanks me for helping their child as well as them it makes me extremely happy and proud to have the career I have. When I see the progress children make and obstacles each one of them overcome it makes me so happy to be a part of a team that is helping them make these progressions and accomplishments."

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?

"I believe that one of the strengths of this community is the resources that are available to children as well as their families. Although, many of these resources are not known about by the majority of people they are out there and for Seguin being a small town it is surprising that so many resources are available."

What do you find the most interesting thing about Seguin?

"The most interesting thing about Seguin to me is how fast news travels!"

What are your future plans?

"I am still not completely sure about my future plans as far as my career goes. I love my job right now but would really like to pursue being a professor as well. I have also thought about going back to school to become an occupational therapist and specializing in pediatrics. For now my focus is on graduating in December and seeing what is offered to me from there."

Seguin Citizen: Hunter Hewell

What is your current occupation (school) and what does that involve?

"I am a senior at Lifegate Christian School, and I work at Tres Hewell Mortuary on some weekends and during the summer."

What do you do off the clock “Just for fun?”

"I usually like to play guitar, watch movies, or hang out with friends – pretty typical teenage stuff. Sometimes I read too."

What city and state were you born?

"I was born in San Antonio, Texas."

Who are the members of your immediate family?

"I am an only child so it’s just my mom and dad."

What is the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced?

"At this point in my life, I just struggle with normal everyday challenges like turning in homework, getting into college, talking to girls, trying to decide what to eat for lunch, etc. -- just normal high-school stuff I suppose."

What is your favorite TV show and movie?

"My favorite TV show would have to be How I Met Your Mother. My favorite movie is probably The Breakfast Club or Friday Night Lights."

What type of music do you enjoy (favorite band, song, etc.)?

"I listen to a little bit of everything. But I mostly listen to country music especially more traditional country like George Strait, Alan Jackson, Merle Haggard, Brooks and Dunn, George Jones, and Garth Brooks to name a few."

What is your favorite Seguin business and restaurant in Seguin?

"My favorite Seguin business is Tres Hewell Mortuary (even though I’m not a customer and hopefully won’t be soon) and my favorite Seguin restaurant is Johnny’s BBQ."

What is something folks may not really know about you?

"Something folks may not know about me is that I’m not Billy Roy. We both work at Tres Hewell Mortuary and people always see him at funerals and think that he is me or that I am him. I’m not sure which one."

"The proudest moment in my life ( for now ) is when we won the State Championship in football this past season."

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?

I believe that the biggest strength in our community is the big sense of family that is here. There are a lot of families that have come to Seguin and stayed here, and their whole family contributes to society and to the Seguin family. I think that’s a cool thing when a lot of good, solid families come together to make an even bigger community family. You don’t see that in a lot of places so I definitely think that is a strength."

"

I think that the most interesting thing about Seguin is that the atmosphere here is still like that of a small town. Seguin still feels like small town America, in a sense. Seguin Citizen: Gonzalo A. Corral

What is your current occupation (or where do you attend school), and what does that involve?

"I am a full time student at Texas Lutheran University. This entails the stress of passing classes and attempting to make change happen through organizations such as MASA (Mexican American Student Association), SAGA (Straight and Gay Alliance) and Alpha Kappa Psi."

What do you do off the clock “Just for fun?”

"I didn't know the word "fun" existed for overstressed college students. I guess if I reach into a past long gone "just for fun" involves sitting in front of the TV watching Netflix with a couple of friends and playing video games."

What city and state were you born in?

"I was born in Durango which is in the state of Durango in the United States of Mexico."

Who are the members of your immediate family?

"There is my amazing mother Zoraida who with so little has given me so much. I can never repay her for everything but can only hope to change the world on her behalf. My brother Alfred and his wife Paula. My beautiful, cute and intelligent nieces Hailey and Mia."

What is the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced?

"My biggest challenge happened without my knowledge. According to many statistics growing up as an illegal immigrant and by being raised by a single parent means that I should have dropped out of high school and have had a kid or two by now. Thanks to many people I have been able to alter the course of my life. This has taught me that there is no challenge that is insurmountable as long as you surround yourself with the right people."

What is your favorite TV show and movie?

"My favorite TV show is Family Guy. I know, crude and immature but people sometimes take themselves too seriously; have a little fun. My favorite movie is Brokeback Mountain . Most people would pass it off as a cliche love story of two gay cowboys but for those who have watched it they know that it so much more. It speaks of star-crossed lovers and how society builds these social constructs that everyone must follow lest one should become an outcast. It still says more but there's no more room here to type."

What type of music do you enjoy (favorite band, song, etc…)?

"Coming from my 'unique' background my taste in many things is probably different from many people. I love mariachi, latin pop, pop, rock, conjunto, banda, whatever Muse is. This can probably be very easily illustrated in my top favorite songs, 'Amor Eterno' by Rocio Durcal; 'Undisclosed Desires' by Muse; and 'Someone Like You' by Adele.”

What is your favorite Seguin business and restaurant?

"My favorite Seguin business is Teatro De Artes De Juan Seguin. Although it is a non-profit, it is in the business of promoting Mexican American culture through the arts.

Restaurant is tougher since I have eaten in many restaurants here. I have to say that my favorite is the Shrimp Barn. It's this tiny little place off of Kingsbury but it offers a monstrous amount of flavor."

What is something folks may not really know about you?

"I absolutely detest...celery. One of the worst foods on this planet."

If you could assemble a dinner party with any five guests (living or dead) -excluding immediate living family members - who would they be?

"A baby dinosaur to prove they existed and analyze their anatomy. Alexander the Great, to see what made him so great. Muhammad and Jesus mostly so they can have a conversation and get this mutual hate thing among their followers situated. I don't know if this counts but my dead Grandma I miss her so very much and would like to have a long conversation with her."

What are your roles in the community?

"My roles in the community are to fill whatever role the community needs."

Discuss your professional background/achievements/leadership roles.

"No professional background yet, but I have been entrusted with many leadership roles at TLU. Of those I most proud to say I am the current President of MASA at TLU and Vice-President of Alumni Relations in Alpha Kappa Psi at TLU. "

What are the proudest moments in your personal life or in your career?

"My proudest moment was the semester I traveled abroad to Spain."

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?

"A strength of this community are its leaders. I have met owners and leaders of various firms and they are all committed to the growth and excellence of Seguin."

What do you find as the most interesting thing about Seguin?

"The most interesting thing about Seguin are the stories here. For example, I was walking around this town and went to the relatively new park close to downtown. Apparently the architect who designed the old park for Seguin was the same guy who designed the Riverwalk for San Antonio. How cool is that?!"

What are your future plans?

"In the next couple of years I see myself working for a nonprofit. Then soon after that I want to either set up my own nonprofit or operate a private business for a few years. I eventually want to return to school in approximately 5 to 7 years to get my MBA at the Wharton School of Business. To say the least my own goals scare me."

What message do you have for the residents of Seguin?

"Embrace TLU. Both entities work together to enhance the potential of this city which can bring about many benefits for all involved. A full hearted embrace from TLU to Seguin and from Seguin to TLU is a necessary catalyst. Like a great marketing campaign once said 'just do it.'

Seguin Citizen: Elisa Wellnitz

What is your current occupation (or where do you attend school), and what

does that involve?

"I am currently a junior theology major (with a focus in Youth & Family Ministry) and art minor at Texas Lutheran. I also serve as the Youth Director at St. John Lutheran Church in Marion. As youth director, I lead sing-a-long every Sunday morning for all ages, teach Confirmation and a Senior High Bible study every Sunday, and host monthly programs. During the summer, I have the privilege of working on Vacation Bible School, leading the day care chapel every week, and taking youth to summer camps. My job is always interesting, and I'm always learning something new!"

What do you do off the clock "Just for fun?"

"I'm the type of person who has learned to never sit still. In my free time, I hold a position as Vice President for a non-profit student organization on campus (Water to Thrive), am Historian for my sorority (Xi Tau), actively involved in Campus Ministry and hold a job through the Office of Enrollment at TLU as an Admissions Ambassador. Even though I am very busy, I find joy in my time being around the people in those organizations. Whether I am coordinating a benefit dinner, showing prospective students the campus, or sitting in our chapel services throughout the week, I always make sure to have fun."

What city and state were you born in?

"I was born in Round Rock, Texas but grew up in Cedar Park, Texas where I attended Cedar Park High School."

Who are the members of your immediate family?

"I have a wonderful mother and step-father, Joe and Gayle Dantone. My father, Rolf Wellnitz, is just as wonderful. I have an older brother who lives in Austin, his name is Jacob. My younger sister is Kim. She is here at TLU with me, and we are both in the same sorority. I also am engaged to Joshua Hrachovina, a TLU alum and current PwC (Houston) Audit Associate."

What is the biggest challenge you've ever faced?

"It's not easy to sum this one up. Growing up, we never had it easy, but my most recent struggle happened just a few months ago. Pastor Jim was the pastor at St. John's for 31 years, when he unexpectedly passed in late-January. I would have to say that my biggest challenge was during that time. He was a great and wonderful man who cared so much about the church, especially our youth program. It was a big challenge for me because I was having to read endless material on crisis management, attend to my youth and families as they were grieving, all at the same time of going through the grief process myself. Two months later and... we're getting there! The church really united that weekend, and it is nothing short of the Holy Spirit that keeps us strong as a community."

What is your favorite TV show and movie?

"I don't have cable, or much time, so watching TV & movies is a rare occurrence. When some time arises, I really enjoy watching wedding shows on Netflix. I've watched every episode of every show imaginable that deals with planning weddings. Some day I want to be a DIY Bride guru; someone who hosts "how-to" workshops for those lucky ladies trying to plan their weddings without a coordinator, as I'm doing right now!

My favorite movie.... Wow, this is difficult. I really love The Princess Bride. My fiance can quote almost any line. It's a movie I grew up with... Classic!"

What type of music do you enjoy (favorite band, song, etc.)?

"I listen to Air1 (97.7) ALL the time! I love it! Whether I am getting ready for the day, driving to school or just having down time, it really helps me focus on my purpose in life: to be a light, and of service, to others. My current favorite is Britt Nicole's Gold."

What is your favorite Seguin business and restaurant?

"My favorite business is Gift & Gourmet. You can always find the cutest things in there!

My favorite Seguin restaurant is Chiro Java. I love getting a hot Cup of Love, a piece of cheesecake and sitting down to write papers for school."

What is something folks may not really know about you?

"I'm more cheesy (in the joke sense) than I seem. I love a great pun or theological joke. I laugh about them for longer than what it probably socially acceptable. Have you ever heard the one about Moses and his headache....? ;-)"

If you could assemble a dinner party with any five guests (living or

dead) -excluding immediate living family members - who would they be?

"Jesus, Martin Luther (the 16th century monk), Michelangelo & Raphael (the painters... not to be confused with the Ninja Turtles), and my late grandfather Glenn Haggen."

What are your roles in the community?

"Student, teacher, friend. Even though my job is out in Marion, and I go to school at TLU, I am still actively participating in programs around town. I've helped volunteer at special projects and help out with the food bank truck delivery at TLU. My over all role, even though not a technical job, is just to be a good role model. I had very influential role models growing up, and if I can give to one person what they gave to me I would say that I lived a successful life."

Discuss your professional background/achievements/leadership roles.

"Besides working at St. John's, my most recent achievements have been school related. I was picked as the recipient of the 2012 Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce Ed Whitacre Leadership Scholarship. I was also inducted into Alpha Chi National Honor Society last fall, which is comprised of TLU's Top 10%."

What are this proudest moments in your personal life or in your career?

"My proudest moments in my life are more of a succession of moments. If you had asked me 'Where do you think you will be in 4 years?' my junior year in high school, I would not have been able to even guess the half of it. I have been so blessed with my time here in the Seguin community. I have great neighbors, attend to an amazing school, and have all the resources I need to be the person I aspire to be. So my proudest moment(s) have just been what I have achieved throughout my time here."

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?

"How supportive the community is, without a doubt. Whether you are out at Seguin Night Life, a TLU sponsored event, or the Fourth of July parade, every one is always generous with their time and resources. They put their best foot forward to help create something spectacular."

What do you find as the most interesting thing about Seguin?

"It's obsession with pecans... I LOVE IT! I grew up with 2 pecan trees in my backyard, so having those images and all the trees around town is a little nostalgic for me."

What are your future plans?

"I plan on graduating TLU in May 2014. After I graduate, I will be getting married in the TLU chapel, moving to Houston to be with my fiance and finding a job in youth ministry or for a non-profit! I cannot wait to see where my life will lead me in the next few years!"

What message do you have for the residents of Seguin?

"Our youth are our future. The more resources we pull together to offer our children, the more chances they will have at fulfilling their dreams! Whether we are offering healthier eating options in schools, more free summer programs or signing up to be a big-brother/big-sister, we can change a generation."

Seguin Citizen: Allison Clark

What is your current occupation (or where do you attend school), and what does that involve?

"I am a junior math major and business minor at Texas Lutheran University, so naturally that consumes most of my time. However, I also work as a peer mentor on campus. Basically, that means I work with a class of about 20 first-year students to help them make their adjustment to college life as smooth as possible!"

What do you do off the clock “Just for fun?”

"I love to hang out with my friends--we've started a new tradition where we get together for a barbecue just about every weekend. When I get the chance, I also like to read or play guitar."

What city and state were you born in?

"I was born in Corpus Christi, Texas."

Who are the members of your immediate family?

"My parents are Amy and George Clark. I also have a brother named Aaron, and cute little schnauzer named Kirby."

What is the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced?

"Probably coming to college -- I was excited to learn to live on my own, but it hasn't been an easy journey. Seguin Citizen: Michael John Martinez Jr.

What is your current occupation (or where do you attend school), and what does that involve?
“I am a dad; Starting Lonestar IT; a member of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 71st Battlefield Surveillance Brigade of the Texas National Guard; Committee Member for Troop 107, Two Rivers District, Alamo Area Council, Boy Scouts of America; Treasurer (almost) for Troop 1244, Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas, help my family with the ranch, an MBA Student at Texas State University. As a dad, I got it pretty easy. My wife, Kristen Michelle Martinez takes care of all the hard stuff, and I get all the hugs, kisses, and ‘Thanks, dad.’ Every once in a while, I get to pitch in with homework, projects, motivation, and keep the walls falling off our house. I say I am Lonestar IT because I believe anyone should be proud of the work they do and identify with it.

In addition to me, Ryan Sargent works as my intern as he attends Texas Lutheran University full time. As a starting business, I perceive I have two main responsibilities: maintain the highest possible level of technical ability in data analytics and support local organizations even if they are not our clients. As a Guardsman, I go over to San Antonio once a month and two weeks a year to train on how to deploy (setup) networks with all sorts of neat cool technical gadgets (about a few million dollars’ worth) and mentor young guardsmen. As a scouter with the BSA, I get to go camping every once in a while and grow as a father to my son, Paul. As a Girl Scout volunteer, I get to make the excuse of looking at arts and crafts magazines and grow as a father to my daughter, Sara. Out at the ranch, I get to teach my kids about how to take care of animals, repair fences, do some other work, and renovate my home (we are installing our living room carpet in April). And as an MBA student, I get to learn that there is a lot of words for what I do every day and write about it. Plan on graduating next year!”

What do you do off the clock “Just for fun?”
“I breathe. I read, currently working my way through Les Miserables, also enjoy science fiction and fantasy novels. I write, poetry, stories, music. Play music, well not as often anymore, but I'll play an instrument or sing every once in a while. Play with the kids, watch movies, and hang out with the family.”

What city and state were you born in?
“If you go to Fort Sam Houston, at north end of the parade field, I got my name in that building when it was Brook Army Medical Center, while my dad was in the operating room saving someone else's life. When someone told him, ‘Michael John Martinez is here.” He said, ‘Yeah that's me.’”

Who are the immediate members of your family?
“My mom is Charlene Anne Martinez. My dad is Staff Sergeant (Ret. USAF) Michael John Martinez. My brother is Zacariaz Ivan Martinez. My sisters are Mitsuko Jerrine Folz and Michelle Danielle Mutchler. My wife is Kristen Michelle Martinez. My kids are William Paul and Sara Michelle Szymanski.”

What is the biggest challenge you faced?
“I took a vacation once. Other than that, separating from Active Duty Army, completing my MBA, staying in shape for the National Guard, keeping my home together, and starting a business has been really tough. I place my faith in the Lord to keep me and my family strong through this transition.”

What is your favorite TV show and movie?
“Thunder Cats, Thunder Cats, Thunder Cats! HO! & Kelly's Heroes, ‘Enough with the negative waves already!’”

What type of music do you enjoy (favorite band, song, etc...)?
“Growing up I found a tape of Billy Joel, and I have been a fan of classic rock ever since. My favorite song is Mamunia sung by Paul McCartney and Wings. Funny word, but the feeling is there.”

What is your favorite Seguin business and restaurant?
“Vivroux's Hardware Store and Mr. Gatti's from when I was a kid. Going to Vivroux's was like going to an Adult Lego Box. And who didn't like Mr. Gatti's? Today, my business excluded, I would go with both of the chambers of commerce. The folks at each are full of advice for my business and my community positions. My favorite restaurant is P.J.'s Restaurant. Ever tried one of their burgers?”

What is something folks may not really know about you?
“Seguin is my hometown. I think my first home was in Schertz, when I was a baby. But my parents have claimed Seguin throughout their military career. Before I was born, my Grandpa Ricardo Martinez bought the land I live on from a man we called “Mr. Stacy.” I always thought he was a nice guy. He liked his beans with ketchup.”

What are your roles in the Community?
“I volunteer for the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. I provide IT support for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Business Alliance of Seguin. I serve as the President of the Downtown Business Alliance of Seguin. I am interested in working with the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce's Ambassador Program.”

Discuss your professional background/achievements/leadership roles.
“I got started in computers when I was kid breaking my Grandpa Al Bishop's computer. Through the years I figured out how to make a computer do something other than get me a beating like building networks in High School. After returning from Japan in 2001, I developed a system proposal for my Uncle Mark Martinez to complete paperwork while in the field as a safety consultant, similar to cloud technology of today. Then, just as the tech bubble burst, I graduated from college. It was really difficult trying to pay people with the lint in my pockets, so I joined the Army. Then the blooming terrorists knocked down the towers. I took a breath and said, “Lord, Watch over me.” My first tour was to Korea in 2003 with 4th Squadron 7th Cavalry, and then to Iraq in 2007 with 5th Squadron 7th Cavalry as a medic. As a medic I designed a database system that reduced work time by more than 75% for company operations at Fort Detrick, Maryland. I returned to the IT field for my last tour in 2009 as a network specialist supporting 1st Engineer Battalion in four different locations in Iraq. After I separated from Active Duty Army in August 2011, I enrolled in Texas State University and started working with CCI Computers Services. While working with CCI Computers, I noticed many businesses were spending a lot of time doing the same things I had remediated in the Army. When I approached Casey Moreland, the owner of CCI Computer Services, he suggested I should run this as a separate business. So I started Lonestar IT. When I mentioned to the Downtown Business Alliance during their Annual Meeting, “We should remain cognizant of the several factors influencing Seguin today, such as SH 130, the Eagle Ford, the growth of Texas State University, and the growth of Guadalupe County.” They nominated me for Their President, which I accepted with the goal of helping the commerce of Seguin grow, while maintaining the culture of Seguin.”

What are the proudest moments in your personal life or in your career?
“When I awake and find my kids are still smiling, fed, wearing clothes on their back, and roof over their head, I truly believe it is a blessing. I have seen some really bad things. I thank the Lord I have never seen that stuff here in the United States. I look back on my time in the Army, and I am proud to have served my Country as a Soldier.”

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?
“Seguin is a town that strives to retain the small town values that cities like San Antonio and Austin now dream of. Low crime and traffic jams that occur when a combine is being moved from one farm to another. Even with the growth our community has experienced over the last several years, we still have small town values. Our community leaders are not blind to this growth and are working hard to find ways to increase commerce without sacrificing the safety, comfort, and value our town has.”

What do you find as the most interesting thing about Seguin?
“That pecan in front of the Courthouse hasn't been made into a pie.”

What are your future plans?
“Maintain our small town value, while generating quality jobs as the DBA President. To build Lonestar IT to provide our businesses with information management techniques that fit our clients' models.”

What message do you have for the residents of Seguin?
“Seguin is a great place to live. Some of the events we have here bring people from all around the country, like The Ladies State Championship Chili Cook-off next month, which attracts over 1500 people each year. Get out and get involved. Don't sit at home and complain about nothing to do in Seguin. Even if you can't afford membership with a group, I am sure they will be more than willing to accept your offer of volunteership.”

Seguin Citizen: DoRae Shipman

Editor’s Note: The Seguin Daily News salute’s today’s Seguin Citizen as she serves away from home.

What is your current occupation and what does that involve?

“I am an instructor at the Silver Flag site which is part of the Detachment 1, 823rd Red Horse Squadron at Tyndall AFB, Florida. Basically, I teach military members how to be successful in setting up and maintaining a new deployment operation.”

What do you do off the clock “just for fun?”

“For fun, my son and I walk along the beach. We also love to hang out building Legos, playing board games, or going to the park. Another exciting weekly adventure is leading his Cub Scout troop.”

What city and state were you born?

“Seguin, Texas”

Who are the members of your immediate family?

“My son Robert Gene Shipman is my pride and joy.”

What is the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced?

“The biggest and best challenge I have ever faced was deciding to join the Air Force. It remains challenging and worthwhile 15 years later.”

What is your favorite TV show and movie?

“My favorite television show is a close call between Little House on the Prairie because of the small town family values that remind me of Seguin and Gilmore Girls because of the mother/daughter bond. I would say Gilmore Girls wins out, since it reminds me of the bond I share with my own mother. As for my favorite movie, that one requires more thought. Essentially any movie with Drew Barrymore in it is top of the list as far as I am concerned.”

What type of music do you enjoy (favorite band, song, etc.)?

“I have more of an eclectic taste in music ranging from country to 90’s grunge to sock hop type genres.”

When you are visiting family members in Seguin, where do you like to shop and eat?

“While I do not get to Seguin very often, I always make a point to eat at El Ranchito every time I return. As for shopping, I have never been much into shopping. I tend to spend every moment possible with my mom, dad, brother, sister-in-law (who I see as a sister rather than an in-law), two nieces, and my grandmother.”

What is something folks may not know about you?

“It may come as a surprise to many that I have a motorcycle license and owned a black and silver Honda many years ago. If that does not surprise anyone, I do have a few tattoos and will be getting a couple more fairly soon.”

If you could assemble a dinner party with any five guests (living or dead and excluding immediate living family members), who would they be?

“My handsome son (even though that breaks the immediate family member rule), two gorgeous nieces Camdyn and Nalani Mikes, and two beautiful cousins Cameron and Delaney Tomlinson would be my idea of perfect dinner party guests. Pictures of those five angels are proudly displayed on front of the refrigerator, which also happens to be the true place of honor in my home.”

What are your professional background/achievements/leadership roles?

“In the last 15 years, I have accomplished a variety of tasks and played part in several leadership roles. The ones that stand out the most are deploying to Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Qatar. In Iraq I earned a Meritorious Service Medal as a Staff Sergeant (E-5). This was a big achievement for me as an award of that caliber is usually reserved for a minimum of two ranks higher. Over the years, I have guided and supervised numerous military members, but my leadership skills were learned from others that sacrificed their time and efforts to teach me become a better military member.”

What are the proudest moments in your personal life or in your career?

“The proudest moment in my life was giving birth to my son. Robert is my entire universe and so much more.”

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?

“Seguin is full of character and an overall feeling of togetherness. Home may be where the Air Force sends me, but Seguin will always hold a special place in my heart.”

What do you find as the most interesting thing about Seguin?

“It does not matter how much time between trips from my military home and hometown, Seguin does not really change. The interesting part is Seguin seems to have grown tremendously since I left in 1997. That is the magic of the town.”

What are your future plans?

“My future plans consist of retiring from the military then returning as a Department of Defense civilian in the San Antonio area.”

What message do you have for the residents of Seguin?

“The residents of Seguin need to continue to be proud of their community and uphold its integrity"

What is your current occupation (or where do you attend school), and what does that involve?

"I attend school at Texas Lutheran University. I am in the Masters of Accountancy program (which is a Bachelor in Business Administration with a specialization in Accounting and a Masters in Accountancy) and am also pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Studies. I work in the Library and Admissions Office at TLU. I am the vice president of the Student Government Association and am a resident assistant for a freshmen residence hall."

What do you do off the clock “Just for fun?”

" I love to go camping, always trying to go to different places. I love leisure reading, especially out in library lawn. I absolutely love traveling. I've been to Spain, Mexico,
Costa Rica. This summer I'm going to Honduras for a mission trip."

What city and state were you born in?

"I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas."

Who are the members of your immediate family?

"I am the youngest of seven children. I have brothers, one sister, and my wonderful mother and father."

What is the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced?

"My biggest challenge was definitely the death of my brother. I never thought that I would be able to survive the loss of someone who was such a huge part of my everyday life. In life, we make the assumption that we will grow old to meet the future children and spouse of brothers and sisters. His death had a huge impact on me. I became a problem child, often getting sent to the office, skipping class and getting in a fight. I was so close to getting suspended and sent to an alternative learning center. After learning how to cope and becoming more familiarize with my Catholic faith, I turned my life around. I became involved in student organization, graduated valedictorian in high school, came to TLU, became part of the honors program as well as other honor societies. It seemed impossible, but God got me through it."

What is your favorite TV show and movie?

"Because of my busy schedule, I do not have the opportunity to watch much TV. However, some of my best times are watching SpongeBob Square Pants with my five-year-old nephew. My favorite movie is Titanic."

What type of music do you enjoy (favorite band, song, etc…)?

"I love Eminem. He is my favorite artist of all time. His music motivates me."

What is your favorite Seguin business and restaurant?

What is something folks may not really know about you?

"Many folks do not realize that I play the piano. I've played since I was five."

If you could assemble a dinner party with any five guests (living or dead) -excluding immediate living family members - who would they be?

"My guests would be Eminem, Beethoven, Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Zooey Deschanel. They're an eclectic mix and have affected a different type of history."

What are your roles in the community?

"My role is the contributor. I love helping out in the community whether it's telling people good morning or helping out in the Habitat for Humanity house or being a part of Day of the Dogs."

Discuss your professional background/achievements/leadership roles.

"I have maintained a job since I was 16. I've worked at Bexar County Courthouse and at a local bank. For over a year now, I've worked at TLU. I am the Vice President of SGA. I plan on running for the President position in the next few weeks."

What are this proudest moments in your personal life or in your career?

"One of the proudest moments was when I was selected to speak to the Board of Regents as a representative to the student body. I was excited to have my potential recognized to speak to such a great group of people."

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?

"The strengths of this community is definitely the close-knit family. People in Seguin genuinely care about one another and it shows. It is one big family."

What do you find as the most interesting thing about Seguin?

"The pecan -- I love Seguin's pecan! It is the world's largest pecan."

What are your future plans?

Seguin Citizen: Kelsey Ragan Engeldinger

What is your current occupation (or where do you attend school), and what

does that involve?

"I am currently a sophomore at Texas Lutheran University. I am a chemistry major with a Spanish and theology double minor. My life pretty much revolves around school, which is okay because in the end, I know it will be worth it. When I am not study, in class, or doing something along the lines of school I am also a lab TA for Dr. Toledo’s General Chemistry 2 class on Monday afternoons. I set up the labs, help the student with their homework and with the lab itself, and also grade their papers. Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday I work in the admissions office as the main person who mails letters, postcards, intro pieces, etc. to prospective high school students as well as transfer students. At home, which is Waco, TX, I work at Old Navy as a sales associate. In June, I will have worked there officially for one year. I really enjoy all of my jobs because I work with great people. There is always something new and unexpected going on. My co-workers are probably some of the nicest, most genuine people I know. And, the discount I get from Old Navy is not too shabby either, haha."

What do you do off the clock "Just for fun?"

"For fun, I catch up on TV shows (some of my favorites being Downton Abby, Mad Men, and The Biggest Loser). Most evenings I drive to San Marcos to spend time with my boyfriend of six years. I just had to add that in there. Also, I like to take naps, I nap a lot more than I should. On the weekend I sometimes go home and spend time with my family and friends from home. They are my most favorite people in the whole world. I love to go shopping, I have a clothes addiction and I do not believe it is a healthy one either. I enjoy working out, I used to be a big time athlete and a year ago played for TLU’s softball team. But, I decided that my schedule was too hectic and even though I miss it dearly, competitive softball like volleyball is a thing in the past. I know it is time to start a new chapter in my life and unfortunately sports couldn’t be included in it. Anyways, I like to spend time with my friends here at school. They are the type of friends that I know I will stay friends with for the rest of my life."

What city and state were you born in?

"I was born in Waco, TX at Hillcrest Hospital at 2 p.m. on June 23, 1993"

Who are the members of your immediate family?

"My mother Dawn Melanie Engeldinger, my father William Ray Engeldinger, my oldest brother Matthew Ryan Engeldinger, my second oldest brother Aaron William Engeldinger, my sister in-law Megan Renae Engeldinger, and my beautiful, wonderful, perfect one year and five month old niece Emma Dawn Engeldinger "

What is the biggest challenge you've ever faced?

"I think I am currently facing my biggest challenge yet, college. My freshman year I had to overcome adversities such as trying to be the best on the softball team and keep up a 4.0 GPA in school. At the same time I needed to be a good girlfriend and friend to those back at home and the new ones I met here at TLU. Currently, I am juggling three jobs and a seventeen hour course load. I know this is a common struggle for every college student, but it is rough. It has been rough anyways. My grades aren’t the best and I am so hard on myself that I can not settle for less than one hundred percent even if it does seem impossible. I think the main challenge I am having right now is fighting with myself honesty. I need to stop being so hard on myself and find the good things within myself instead of always putting myself down. I know, in all honesty that I am my own worst enemy and it takes a toll on me. I have been the more sick here in college than I have been in my whole life. But, my overall goal of helping other by becoming an occupational therapist and making my family proud is my main driving factor in overcoming this small obstacle."

What is your favorite TV show and movie?

"My favorite movie, I know this may be lame, but is Miss Congeniality. Sandra Bullock is probably my favorite actress of all time and her character in this movie reminds me a lot of myself. My favorite TV, that’s a hard decision. I think it is between Downton Abbey or Mad Men. I like all of the drama, I think it is because thankfully I have known in my life. I also believe I love both of these shows because they are based in different time periods, Mad Men being based here in America in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. I am sort of out of my element being here in this time period. I feel as though I should have been born in a different era. Probably because of how my parents raised me, but I love history and learning about it. Downton Abbey is based in Britain during the early 1900’s. But, my favorite TV show of all time is Friends. I have the complete series. I watch it every day and it never seems to get old."

What type of music do you enjoy (favorite band, song, etc.)?

"I actually like and enjoy all types of music, from country to rap to oldies to classical to heavy metal to light rock to alternative. It just depends on what kind of mood I am in. Lately though, I have been listening to a lot of Miranda Lambert. This is mainly because, I love to sing to her songs really loudly in the car while driving and also because she is so empowering and makes me feel like I can be as strong and independent as she is. However, my first concert was with my brother, Matthew, in San Antonio, TX and we saw a Mastadon and Opeth two heavy metal bands. It was pretty fun and a great experience."

What is your favorite Seguin business and restaurant?

"My roommate and friends love to go to the Paisley Patch, on Austin Street for cupcakes. Those cupcakes will definitely put a smile on your face and warmth in your heart. We go there when we are having a bad day or celebrating something or just because it’s a cupcake kind of day. I think my favorite by far is their banana split cupcake. I also run over there sometimes before I head to Waco to bring my family back surprises. I also love Seguin’s Goodwill; they have really good prices and really good stuff. I probably go there about twice a month to browse through everything. It’s the best Goodwill I have ever been to."

jump

What is something folks may not really know about you?

"Um, there is probably a lot that people do not know about me being that I don’t really know many people here. But, I used to play the piano and I truly miss it and wish that I was more dedicated at the time. I also want to one day live in a different state. I am so drawn to New York, Colorado, Chicago. I don’t know really where exactly, but somewhere new and exciting. I love to help others and I am a really nosey person. I love meeting and learning about new people and hearing their stories. I am so intrigued by people and have never noticed it before until now in college."

If you could assemble a dinner party with any five guests (living or

dead) -excluding immediate living family members - who would they be?

"Wow this is hard, there are and were so many amazing people in the world. I honestly would want the Queen of England to be there. She seems so incredible and all knowing. I would love to learn about her life and everything she has done in it. She has been alive for so many different historical occurrences and I think it would be great to hear her stories. I would want my grandma Jenny there; she died before I was born due to kidney cancer. I truly believe that she is the reason I am here today. She always told my parents that they were going to have a girl and I think that when she died she put in a good word with the man upstairs and sent my parents me. This sounds really cliché, but I would want Jesus Christ to be there because being a theology major I have learned all of these things about him second hand. I would like to know who he really was and how he really made such an impact on everyone. Really I want to know the truth about everything we read about in the Bible. Also, I want to know how I can become a better Christian. I am so stuck in a rut right now and I believe that his guidance would be of great use not for just me, but for all of the people around me. I can teach others what he teaches me in the time we had together. My fourth guest would be someone from the Holocaust. I am one hundred percent German, I was born here though and do not know a lick of German, but German history intrigues me. I want to hear first-hand what it was like to be there and endure such tragedy. Finally, I would want Sandra Bullock there to maybe lighten the mood. She seems like such an amazing, put together person. I would like to learn about whom she really is and hopefully she can teach me how to become as poised, graceful, and elegant as she is."

What are your roles in the community?

"I would like to become more involved in the community than just helping out during our college’s volunteer days. But, I believe that my role right now in the community is to be the face of Texas Lutheran University. I believe that being the leader and as driven as I am I could educate the people of Seguin by letting the community know why a college degree is so important today. I want to let everyone know that anyone, I mean anyone can become a college graduate. Where there is a will there is a way. I want to graduate from Texas Lutheran University and become successful so I can get TLU’s name out there as well as Seguin. I think by being a leader within the college I can spread the news about how prestigious this little, unknown college really is. The bigger the population within the college means the greater the wealth of the community and then the city of Seguin can build themselves up to be a better known city as well."

Discuss your professional background/achievements/leadership roles.

"As of right now I do not have very many. I am working my way towards new achievements and leadership roles. In high school, I was nominated as a rotary scholar. I believe my biggest leadership role right now is being the best student I can be and helping as many people as I can. My biggest achievement as of now is being a PACE scholar. Being a PACE scholar means that you had really high grades in high school and were a leader within your community. I also volunteered and the Ball Center of Seguin for a semester. I helped with the special needs class and it was very touching to see how much the teachers care about their students."

What are this proudest moments in your personal life or in your career?

"The proudest moment was probably in my senior year in high school when we made history by being the first softball team at Connally High School to go to playoffs. I was so proud of myself, my teammates, and my coaches. Those moments were probably the best times of my life yet."

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?

"A strength of the community of Seguin is that they are small, and being small they have the advantage to come together and make a difference. Another strength of the community is housing one of the top colleges in America, Texas Lutheran University. The college brings new people, cultures, religions, and ideas to this community. I believe that the college makes the community stronger by making their motto of, “Learn Boldly, Live to Inspire” a reality. The school helps the community in many ways. I believe that the people of this community are very hard working. The work ethic of the community shows that there is hope that everyone one day will work together and better the community. The location of Seguin is wonderful. You are not that far away from Austin, San Antonio, Gruene, or New Braunfels. I feel like being this close to other communities reaches out to the people of those communities and then they can also help with the need of Seguin. Seguin is actually a really pretty location. They have a really nice park that the river runs through and I believe it strengthens the community by bringing travelers here to see what Seguin is all about."

What do you find as the most interesting thing about Seguin?

"The most interesting thing that I have learned about Seguin is how poor the community really is. It saddens me that the kids of the community have to go through what they go through. I just feel as though there must be something that I can do to help the cause. I just never knew how broken the community was until I went to volunteer at the advocacy center and heard the stories that were told. It makes me want to help kids and parents learn about what is happening and how to prevent these events from happening. Awareness is important within this community and together we can make it a better, more comfortable town to live in."

What are your future plans?

"After I graduate from college, I plan to go to occupational therapy school to become an occupational therapist. As an occupational therapist, I would like to focus on children mostly. I love kids, and I want to do whatever I can to help them live healthy, happy lives. I want to help teach children with autism motor skill and those in which have disabilities to do simple tasks. I just hate to see children suffer and if there is any way that I can help them I will."

What message do you have for the residents of Seguin?

"Together as a unit, Seguin can become a great place to live and visit. I believe that awareness and teaching everyone about the struggles of the community will prevent further ones and make for a community in which works together. Do something nice for someone every day and it will cause a domino effect. People will see what you are doing and will want to do it as well. Together we can make Seguin a great place to be."

Also open healthier restaurants. Another area of concern is how many stray and or abandoned animals I see all the time. I’d love to see a, “no kill,” shelter put in place. My parents own several rental properties in town and they always do their best to make sure that they are decent places. I see way too many dilapidated buildings that either need to be fixed and or torn down. I’d like to see Seguin have a nicer appearance. "

Seguin Citizen

February 23rd, 2013

Seguin Citizen: Jeneisa Nicole Davis

Where do you attend school, and what does that involve?

"I attend Texas Lutheran University and I am studying to be a teacher. The university has helped me connect with my peers in which they are always there if you need any help. Overall, I am happy that TLU has given me the oppurtunity to connect with Seguin, and learn more about their culture."

What do you do off the clock “Just for fun?”

"I like to play cards with my friends, go shopping, as well as go to the movies. These are great ways to just relax from a crazy week, or even catch up with my friends and see how they have been doing."

What city and state were you born in?

"I was actually born on a small island named St. Croix in the Virgin Islands next to Puerto Rico. By being born here, it helped me learn how to adapt and take part of my community wherever I go. My family and I managed to move to Houston. Then I was accepted to TLU which is how I made it here in Seguin."

Who are the members of your immediate family?

"My mom, dad, and three brothers, Daniel, Erik, and Brandon -- they always motivate me to do my best and to always be a good role model to those who are around me."

What is the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced?

"The biggest challenge I have ever faced is to be more outspoken. I have always kept to myself, and I just listen to others rather than 'standing out.' However, high school and college have changed that. In 10th grade, I have made the most amazing friends that anyone could ever asked for. We had a lot of fun, and we always stayed connected with each other. It was because of this grade that helped me come out of my shell. In coming into college, even though I did not know anyone, it was pretty impossible to not make a friend. My first roommate automatically became my best friend, and we helped out each as much as possible. We were both headstrong, in which we wanted leadership roles that will help us be known around campus. In overcoming the challenge to be more outspoken and known, this has taught me the importance of having motivating people around you."

What is your favorite TV show and movie?

"My favorite current TV show is Once Upon a Time and my favorite movie is the Princess Bride. I absolutely love fairy tale stories."

What type of music do you enjoy (favorite band, song, etc…)?

"I enjoy hip hop as well as Christian contemporary songs. My favorite artist is Toby Mac, and my favorite songs from him would be Hold on, and Forgiveness. Christian Contemporary helps me grow in my faith, as well as understand the goodness that God has in our lives."

What is your favorite Seguin business and restaurant?

"My favorite Seguin business is the Heritage Museum. The museum helps me understand more about Seguin’s history and how it came about. I love history. My favorite Seguin restaurant is Kirby’s. Kirby’s always has a postive atmosphere whenever my friends and I dine there, and it's yummy."

What is something folks may not really know about you?

"I love to play video games on my down time. It is a great stress reliever and it helps me learn how to problem solve. The adventure and racing games are my favorite. I love racing games, because I can be very competitive, and I love adventure games because you get to follow a story line."

If you could assemble a dinner party with any five guests (living or dead) -excluding immediate living family members - who would they be?

"I would dine with Jesus, Toby Mac, Abraham Lincoln, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Shia Labeouf. I chose these five because I have so many questions to ask them about their works, and I hope they will each give me some advice that will help build my character."

What are your roles in the community?

"In attending TLU, I am in two different organizations that is making a positive impact on campus and the community. I am a Peer Mentor, and I am the president of the Campus Congregation. In being a Peer Mentor, it is my job to help first year students learn more about the campus and the different ways that they can be involved. I love this job because I can be able to help them to the best of my ability, as well as be a positive impact to their TLU journey. For the Campus Congregation group, it is our job find different ways to help students be engaged in Chapel. It is a great way to network and brainstorm on things that can help lead students closer to God, and understand his love. I love this job because I can be able to stay connected with students who are engaged in the ministry. In taking on these leadership roles, it helps me stay connected with my peers, and it helps me explore different ways that I can make an impact in my community. They both help me become a stronger person, as well as do the things that I love to do. (Helping Others)"

Discuss your professional background/achievements/leadership roles.

"As part of my major, I am currently observing at various schools to learn the best methods on teaching the children of the future. The education program helps me understand the importance of teaching and the impact it has on the children. While in TLU, one of my main achievments is that I managed to keep my G.P.A above 3.0, in which this has put me on the Dean’s List twice. Some leadership roles I have taken part of is Peer Mentor, Campus Congregation, a group leader in Day of the Dogs (a community service event), in High School I was a part of the National Honor Society, I represented my school in the Girl’s State program that is held at TLU in the summer, and I was the Captain of my debate team. All of these things have made me a better person and it helped me grow."

What are this proudest moments in your personal life or in your career?

"The most proudest moment in my personal life is that, I mangaged to go to a university. While growing up, neither of my parents had completed college. To me, this was a small challenge because I did not know what to expect or how to react in different situations. However, because of my family’s strong faith, I managed to be introduced and be accepted to a wonderful university in which I only have one more year to go. In being the oldest child and the only girl, my brothers use me as a motivation that they can be able to go and complete college and stay headstrong. I am rooting for citizens across the community who want to go and complete college. My advice to you is that 'You can do it!'”

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?

"In coming into Seguin, one of the strengths that I see is that everyone sticks together. (For example the Christmas Parade) Everyone is close to those who are around them, and most are willing to help those who are in need. An example of this is when I volunteered in helping with an adult ESL class, some students helped others understand the material when they were stuck. In volunteering within the Seguin community, some citizens always have a smile on their face, in which this brightens up someone’s day. An example, is when I volunteered at the Heritage Museum and the nursing home near Walmart. They were always friendly towards us and they were very welcoming."

What do you find as the most interesting thing about Seguin?

"The most interesting thing about Seguin to me is that it houses the world’s largest pecan. In traveling downtown for the first time, I probably took more than 10 pictures in front of the pecan with my friends. The downtown area is a great place to wind down and relax especially when the fountain lights go off at night."

What are your future plans?

"My future plans are to travel as much as I can. I love to go to different places, and learn about different things. It will help give me an idea on what the world is like, as well as find different ways to help a community. As a career, I would like to take part of administration in schools, in which I will like to find various ways that will impact the students learning on a positve note."

What message do you have for the residents of Seguin?

"I challenge everyone to do a random act of kindness."

"For two years, off and on in 1963 and 1964, I appeared on CBS on “House Party” starring Art Linkletter. This grew out of appearances on “Kids Say the Darndest Things”. I did stand up comedy at age four. Seriously! Well I didn’t stand, they actually put me on a stool and I told jokes."

If you could assemble a dinner party with any five guests (living or dead) -excluding immediate living family members - who would they be?

"Music and comedy would be the theme – Elvis, Jimmy Buffet, Robin Williams, Groucho Marx, Jonathan Winters"

What are your roles in the community?

"I enjoy emceeing charity events: Guadalupe County Junior Miss, ARF Banquet, Guadalupe County Child Advocacy Center, Seguin Education Foundation, Destination Imagination. I am a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Seguin Rotary Club."

Discuss your professional background/achievements/leadership roles.

"I have a BBA in statistics & marketing from Baylor University and an MBA from University of Houston Clear Lake. I taught at Baylor for two semesters, and then for 29 years, I have been in hospital finance and related industries."

What are this proudest moments in your personal life or in your career?

"With my wife, raising two independent, Christian children. They are a source of daily pride."

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?

"For any suburban or rural town to thrive, I believe it needs three things: diversified economy, strong schools, and excellent healthcare. I believe Seguin has all three. With the advent of some of the manufacturing companies in Seguin, we have a much stronger economy. Schools in this area continue to get better, and the hospital and healthcare providers in Seguin are top notch. As one who has visited over 1,500 hospitals around the world, I can tell you that GRMC, and its staff, is a gem.

Above all of that, I believe the strength of this community is our youth. I tend to involve myself in youth focused charities. As a result, I get to interact with many young people. They never cease to impress me and give me hope for the future."

What do you find as the most interesting thing about Seguin?

"Great people -- I have lived here 25 years, and I am constantly meeting a Seguinite who impresses me. The community pride is strong and warranted. This pride and pool of talented, nice, people probably enables the strengths I mentioned earlier."

What are your future plans?

"In several years, I would like to return to the university ranks and lecture again (hopefully TLU Administration is reading this!). In my immediate future, I am going to try to keep my wife from running for the hills."

What message do you have for the residents of Seguin?

"We really need a new high school. I have seen the arguments that it will attract more businesses, and improve test scores because of an improved learning environment and those are all true. However, the main reason we should be building a new school is safety and security. Given the recent tragic events in CT, I want Seguin kids to be safe. The current school has too many entrances and exits with all of the multiple buildings. Fellow citizens, we have built an updated hospital, we have renovated our parks, streets have been improved, new large companies have been brought in to Seguin -- the last piece of the puzzle is a new high school. "

What do you do off the clock “Just for fun?”

"I love spending time with my husband and kids as much as I can. We love to barbecue at home and spend time together and listen to music. We also enjoy going to my hometown of Gonzales to visit my parents and barbecue and visit some more! Whenever we find the time. I also love to go bowling, and my husband has taught me how to shoot guns (safely), and has also got my boss, Kristen, doing the same (she’s a better shot than me though). What is the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced?

"My biggest challenge consists of every time I was chosen as or chose to lead any of the big events that take more than a week like the Cricket Chirps Newspaper or the two plays I directed freshman and sophomore year. Editor's note: The Seguin Daily News today posthumously honors and recognizes the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Today marks the national holiday commemorating not only his birthday but also his life long efforts to promote peace and diversity.

Seguin Citize: Martin Luther King, Jr.

(January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968)

King was born Michael Luther King, Jr., but later had his name changed to Martin. His grandfather began the family's long tenure as pastors of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, serving from 1914 to 1931; his father has served from then until the present, and from 1960 until his death Martin Luther acted as co-pastor. Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of 15; he received the B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished African-American institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior class, he was awarded the B.D. in 1951. With a fellowship won at Crozer, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family.

In 1954, Martin Luther King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Always a strong worker for civil rights for members of his race, King was, by this time, a member of the executive committee of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the leading organization of its kind in the nation. He was ready, then, early in December, 1955, to accept the leadership of the first great African-American nonviolent demonstration of contemporary times in the United States, the bus boycott described by Gunnar Jahn in his presentation speech in honor of the laureate. The boycott lasted 382 days. On December 21, 1956, after the Supreme Court of the United States had declared unconstitutional the laws requiring segregation on buses, African-Americans and whites rode the buses as equals. During these days of boycott, King was arrested, his home was bombed, he was subjected to personal abuse, but at the same time he emerged as an African-American leader of the first rank.

In 1957 he was elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization formed to provide new leadership for the now burgeoning civil rights movement. The ideals for this organization he took from Christianity; its operational techniques from Gandhi. In the 11 period between 1957 and 1968, King traveled over six million miles and spoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles. In these years, he led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that caught the attention of the entire world, providing what he called a coalition of conscience. and inspiring his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail", a manifesto of the African-American revolution; he planned the drives in Alabama for the registration of African-Americans as voters; he directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C., of 250,000 people to whom he delivered his address, "l Have a Dream", he conferred with President John F. Kennedy and campaigned for President Lyndon B. Johnson; he was arrested upwards of 20 times and assaulted at least four times; he was awarded five honorary degrees; was named Man of the Year by

Time magazine in 1963; and became not only the symbolic leader of American-Americans but also a world figure.

At the age of 35, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize. When notified of his selection, he announced that he would turn over the prize money of $54,123 to the furtherance of the civil rights movement.

On the evening of April 4, 1968, while standing on the balcony of his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was to lead a protest march in sympathy with striking garbage workers of that city, he was assassinated.

Seguin Citizen: Jack Lee

What is your current occupation (or where do you attend school), and what does that involve?

"I teach economics, government, AP economics at Seguin High School and serve as Faculty Sponsor of the Seguin HS Interact Club."

What do you do off the clock "Just for fun?"

"Life, if you stay positive and if you play your cards right, will always be fun."

What city and state were you born in?

"El Paso, Texas, but my wife and daughter moved to Seguin in 1978 -- I consider Seguin to be where we have planted my roots so it’s 'home' to me and my family."

Who are the members of your immediate family?

"I am married to Peggy, the love of my life and the world’s best kindergarten teacher. We have a daughter, Amy Hanson and three grandchildren: Logan who is studying engineering at Texas State University, Leif who is a sophomore at Seguin High School, Mary Elizabeth who is four and my 'best buddy' and Laura Elaine Torres, my grandson Logan’s amazing girlfriend. My extended family is all of the 10,000+ fantastic young men and women it has been my honor to teach."

What is the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced?

"I’m not sure. Like everyone, I’ve suffered losses because of the 'circle of life' but that is just God and nature’s way of making room for greater things to come. Challenges come with change and, therefore, are never ending. Almost all seem huge at the time, but looking back on them, most were just a matter of being flexible, adjusting, or coping. Almost all have been learning experiences that I’ve been lucky enough to profit from."

What is your favorite TV show and movie?

"As far as television goes, I am a news and information junkie. The television in my study is almost always on C-Span or one of the news networks. As far as movies go, anything historic, political but entertaining. Among those that I enjoy watching time and again are Separate but Equal (about the Brown v. Topeka Board of Education decision), 1776, All the President’s Men and recently Too Big to Fail. I would like to add any movie or performance I get to go to with my 'best buddy', Mary Elizabeth."

What type of music do you enjoy (favorite band, song, etc…)?

"Classic rock -- The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Steve Miller Band and Classic (Texas) Country -- Gary P. Nunn, Willie Nelson, Asleep at the Wheel, Marcia Ball, George Strait."

What is your favorite Seguin business and restaurant?

"I am a great supporter of locally owned businesses and whenever I can, I try to patronize them. If we can all do our best to take care of our small world the effects of these actions will ripple out and the rest of the world will be just fine. To name one would be a disservice to the scores of my other local friends."

What is something folks may not really know about you?

"I’m NOT a hippie; I just LOOK like one!"

If you could assemble a dinner party with any five guests (living or dead) -excluding immediate living family members - who would they be?

"Jesus, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Mohammad and Thurgood Marshall. (Sorry John Locke, I had to put you on the 'b' list because five was my limit). I really would like to use their collective intellect to focus on sending today’s world the message that diversity resulting from birth or thought is not a threat but God’s tool to make us better."

What are your roles in the community?

"I hope it would be 'friend'. I try to use my limited time and effort to work with and inspire my friends and students to work together, put aside differences to fix what needs fixing and leave alone all of those. Interact participates in or sponsors nearly 30 community service or international understanding projects each year."

Discuss your professional background/achievements/leadership roles.

"As I said earlier, I am and have been the faculty advisor to the Seguin HS Interact Club since it was first chartered 20 years ago. For the past several years I have chaired the Superintendent’s Teacher Communication Council. I serve on the District’s Diversity Council. At the high school, I serve on the Site Council, Advisory Councils for Career and Technology for students pursuing Engineering and Education career paths. Additionally, I serve on the National Honor Society Advisory Council."

What are this proudest moments in your personal life or in your career?

"The day I married Peggy, the births of my grandchildren and watching my students 'walk across the stage' each year at graduation."

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?

"Our diversity. If we could just learn to capitalize on it and use our collective experiences and talents to make our community even better for all of our citizens and never adopt the 'us' and 'them' mindset."

What do you find as the most interesting thing about Seguin?

"It’s people. There are so many people who 'everyone knows' that just personifies the diversity I described. You may not agree with everything (and sometimes very little) about their views and discussions can be spirited, but you almost always part as friends."

What are your future plans?

"I love my job, so as long as I remain healthy, I'll look forward to getting up and teaching my kids. Whenever I do retire, I’ll probably be an annoying parent volunteer in Mary Elizabeth’s classroom."

"My father Leland and my mother Haydee"

What is the biggest challenge youve ever faced?

"I believe that my biggest challenge has been finishing both my undergraduate and graduate school programs. Not only finishing school, but finding employment after. "

What is your favorite TV show and movie?

"Mysteries at the Museum on the Travel Channel and my favorite movie would have to be a toss-up between Sunset Boulevard, All about Eve and Vertigo."

What is your favorite Seguin business and restaurant?

"There are so many great restaurants here in Seguin. I really enjoy going to Garcias, Creek Side and also Johnny's."

If you could assemble a dinner party with any five guests (living or dead) -excluding immediate living family members - who would they be?

"William Saffold (After all the years of researching him, it would be great to see what he actually looked like.), Bette Davis, Alfred Hitchcock, John Singer Sargent and Lucille Ball"

What are your roles in the community?

"I feel like my role in the community is to help protect and save some of Seguins most important historical artifacts, but also to display and to be able to present Seguins history for our community and our out-of-town visitors."

Discuss your professional background/achievements/leadership roles.

"I received my undergraduate degree from Texas Lutheran University with a major in history and a minor in art. I then went to Texas Tech University for my Masters in Museum Science. I was the collection manager for the ethnology and textiles division for the Museum of Texas Tech University for about two years before being asked to become the Curator for the Seguin Heritage Museum."

What are the proudest moments in your personal life or in your career?

"Each time that I am able to produce or help coordinate one of the larger exhibits; its quite exciting to get everything set up and have all the hard work, research and design come together to produce a product that is enjoyable to the public. Two exhibits that come to mind is a wedding dress exhibit I did for Texas Tech University, celebrating 100 years of wedding fashion. We had to customize over 50 mannequins for each dress, plus create paper wigs for each one. The second exhibit is the Timmermann Sister exhibit which is currently up at the Seguin Heritage Museum."

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?

"We have a strong sense of community here in Seguin and I think that shows. We have an improving downtown community that is getting stronger each year and we are having more and more events and programs that not only get the community involved, but also gets invites out of town visitors to come."

What do you find as the most interesting thing about Seguin?

"I think the most interesting thing about Seguin is its history! Our community has such as rich and noteworthy history. We have had a person from Seguin become Governor of Texas (John Ireland), we had the first African American enterprise in Texas after reconstruction (Wilson Pottery), "Jack Coffee Hays married at Magnolia Hotel, we once were known as the Concrete City back in the mid-1800s and John Wesley Hardens autobiography was published here in Seguin after his death. We have so many stories to tell and we should be proud to tell people about it!"

What are your future plans?

"My future plans will hopefully include working for a museum. My contract with the Seguin Heritage Museum ends at the end of February due to the lack of funding. I will look forward to continuing to apply my enthusiasm to new exhibits and communities in my next endeavor."

What message do you have for the residents of Seguin?

"Here at the Seguin Heritage Museum, we are currently hosting Continuing a Christmas Tradition: The Timmermann Collection. The Museum staff and volunteers worked very hard putting together this wonderful exhibit that tells the story of the Seguins and Geronimos Famous Timmermann Sisters. I would like to give a special thanks to the Timmermann family for loaning several of the objects for this exhibit. Without their support this exhibit would not have been possible. I encourage the public to stop by and see this exhibit. The Museum is displaying their Christmas decorations, the orphanage that was set up under their Christmas tree each year, and clothing and furniture from their home.

There are free sample recipes from the Timmerman sisters to take home. Issues of Life Magazine and Better Homes and Gardens are on display, as well as a copy of the Texas Country Reporter from when they made an appearance. The exhibit will be up until January 31st and can be viewed during the museum hours, Monday to Friday 11am to 4pm.

If you have a group that would like to come by on the weekend to see the exhibit, an appointment can be made by calling us at 830-372-0965. Make sure to visit us on our website www.theheritagemuseum.org and our facebook page to see what new exhibits and events are coming up. And as always, admission to the Museum is free!"

Seguin Citizen: Rachel Kiel

What is your current occupation (or where do you attend school), and what does that involve?

"I am currently a senior at Texas Lutheran University pursuing a master’s degree in accounting, which involves a lot of studying and hard work. I also work part-time at Alamo Group, here in Seguin, as an internal audit intern. Being an internal audit intern basically involves checking other people’s work to make sure it is accurate and ensure that internal controls are working properly."

What do you do off the clock “Just for fun?”

"Well, with what time I have left 'just for fun' I enjoy going to the gym at 78155 Athletic Club. That’s one of my major stress relievers. I like the group fitness classes they have there. I also enjoy spending time with my boyfriend, Josh, and my family. They are all very important to me. I’m pretty simple so going to the movies, being outside, or watching TV is enjoyable to me."

What city and state were you born in?

"I was born in New London, Connecticut."

Who are the members of your immediate family?

"My parents are Marcia Kiel and Jay Kiel. I have a 16-year-old brother, Dylan, and 4 year old half-sister, Cassidy. I am also so blessed to have two wonderful nephews, Dylan and Kason."

What is the biggest challenge you’ve ever faced?

"Tough question -- so many answers. However, I would have to say facing adversity has been my biggest challenge. My family and I don’t come from money, so I’ve had to work hard for everything I have including working since I was 16. Some people seem to believe I will not be successful and I say they’re wrong. I have already come so far in my life by working hard. I believe I can do anything I set my mind to and am looking forward to proving all those wrong who were not really here for me throughout my life and did not believe in me. Adversity has made me a stronger person and I will continue to overcome it throughout my life."

What is your favorite TV show and movie?

"I recently got into The Vampire Diaries. I also love The Golden Girls and pretty much any reality-not-really-reality shows. I’m such a hopeless romantic, my favorite movie is Titanic (although my favorite Disney movie is Aladdin)."

What type of music do you enjoy (favorite band, song, etc…)?

"I like all kinds of music, but mostly pop and country."

What is your favorite Seguin business and restaurant?

"My favorite Seguin business is probably Bealls but I admittedly don’t get to do much shopping. My favorite restaurant would have to be Bella Sera. I love Italian food and could eat there every day. Their food is amazing!"

What is something folks may not really know about you?

"I’m really shy and quiet (as in being the Seguin Citizen is way out of my comfort zone) but once you get to know me it’s hard to shut me up!"

If you could assemble a dinner party with any five guests (living or dead) -excluding immediate living family members - who would they be?

"Martin Luther King, Jr., Walt Disney, Betty White, Abraham Lincoln, and Heath Ledger. All are amazing people in their own way and have had significance in our history and it would be neat to talk to any and all of these people!"

What are your roles in the community?

"When possible I volunteer with various events in Seguin and at TLU. I also enjoy supporting Seguin High School men’s basketball (I may be a little biased because my brother plays for the team) and football (when the season wasn’t over) teams."

Discuss your professional background/achievements/leadership roles.

"Receiving the PACE scholarship at TLU was a great achievement for me because it’s one of the biggest scholarships they give to students. I have been on the Provost’s and Dean’s list every year at TLU. I am also involved in several honor societies, including Alpha Lambda Delta, Delta Epsilon Iota, Alpha Chi, and Delta Mu Delta. I am also a member of the newly formed Black & Gold President’s Council."

What are this proudest moments in your personal life or in your career?

"Getting accepted to TLU was a great accomplishment for me because I felt like my hard work in high school paid off. When I received an internship at Alamo Group, I was also excited because I knew it was a great opportunity and had heard great things about Alamo Group. I also start an external audit internship with Ernst & Young on January 4 in San Antonio, which is probably one of my greatest accomplishments as well because I never would have thought a small-town girl would be able to work for one of the Big 4 accounting firms."

What do you believe are the strengths of this community?

"I think because Seguin is so small that gives it a great advantage because everyone knows each other and works together when someone or an organization needs a helping hand."

What do you find as the most interesting thing about Seguin?

"I find it interesting that people in surrounding areas underestimate the citizens of Seguin. I think there are many great things and people here in Seguin and we have yet to show people what we are truly made of."

What are your future plans?

"I plan to graduate from TLU in May 2014. Upon graduation, I plan to study for the CPA exam and hopefully pass it and become a licensed CPA as soon as possible. If things go right during my internship with Ernst & Young, I will hopefully receive a job offer from them and be working there after graduation. After that -- who knows what the future may hold. I’m excited for it though!"

What message do you have for the residents of Seguin?

"If you have a dream, go for it. No matter how big or small it may be, or what your background is no dream is too small. You never really know what you can accomplish until you go for it. I know the citizens of Seguin, and the community of Seguin itself, has so much more to offer. I would love to see this community turned around from a negative connotation to a positive one. This is our home and we have a responsibility to take care of it and want to see this city live up to its greatest potential. What are we waiting for?"
